The mission of Craigslist Foundation is to provide knowledge, resources and visibility to the next generation of nonprofit leaders. One of the organization's primary vehicles for addressing its mission is Nonprofit Boot Camp, a nonprofit conference that has succeeded in attracting more than 1,500 participants at its 2006 conference in the Bay Area. This innovative and rapidly growing model of educational programming accomplishes Craigslist Foundation's mission by educating, empowering and connecting emerging nonprofit professionals and fostering leadership within the sector.
In 2007, Craigslist Foundation hired Harder+Company to assess current data collection activities and make recommendations for evaluating the ongoing value and long-term results of Nonprofit Boot Camp for the nonprofit sector and its leaders. The goal of the project was to develop an evaluation plan for the future that Craigslist staff could execute on their own using internal and in-kind resources.
Our first step in working with Craigslist Foundation was to learn more about the goals of Nonprofit Boot Camp and the theory of change underlying this programming strategy. We then worked with staff to develop a logic model that linked resources and activities to intended outcomes of Nonprofit Boot Camp and key indicators of change. Harder+Company conducted exploratory surveys, focus groups and interviews with former Nonprofit Boot Camp participants in order to understand more about the ongoing value and long-term results of conference participation and to pilot test effective evaluation methods and measures.
Based on the results from our analysis of data collected, we developed an Evaluation Toolkit that provides recommendations for ongoing evaluation which can be conducted by Craigslist Foundation staff. The Toolkit includes a series of customized evaluation tools, recommendations for sampling and frequency of data collection, as well as a data analysis plan and reporting schedule. Harder+Company also provided technical assistance and training to Craigslist Foundation staff to help them implement evaluation activities successfully.
